Alex Kelliher
Manager at Boardertown
Alex tells us that his family originates from the United States and aside from his immediate family the rest still live there.
It was his Dad’s Agricultural Science work that brought his family to New Zealand and it is here where he developed a love of the outdoors - in particular Skate Boarding and Snowboarding.
At the age of 18 years and wanting to experience more of the world, Alex got the opportunity through one of his mother’s connections to head to Colorado and be a lift operator at the Aspen Ski Resort. This provided the opportunity to live the dream and snowboard whenever he wanted during his time off.
Continuing his travels, Alex then moved to Vancouver where he worked in a skate shop because he wanted to work in a business that he liked. However, it was his ongoing education that bought him home saying it is easier to balance your life studying in New Zealand.
Alex completed a double degree in Law and The Arts at Canterbury University but said he probably won’t become a lawyer as that profession is fairly saturated and due being a high stress occupation, you need to be 100% in, which he feels is not for him.
Pre-Earthquake, Alex worked at Cheapskates on High Street and has been with Boardertown for three and a half years now. He said it is a great company and is likely the largest Skate / Snowboarding company in New Zealand.
He said the company performed well during Covid due to its great systems and is a progressive company with fantastic owners.
Alex loves Christchurch as it has great outdoors, with the Port Hills, Bottle Lake Forest, the mountains, and Hagley Park all in close proximity. He said Queenstown is also great but it is not a city.
We asked what are some of the places he loves going here in our city.
I do a lot of running so Hagley Park is a great place to run. I also frequent Rockpool to shoot some pool with friends and we checked out Holey Moley at EntX a couple of weeks back, it was a lot of fun.
What are some of your favourite places for Lunchtime food?
The Fried Chicken at Seoul Tiger in Riverside is amazing, the best-fried chicken in the city. Pilgrim also has great coffee and food.
Where do you go for fashion?
I buy a lot from Boardertown obviously, but I want to give a shout-out to Oska from Front Runner. He has given a lot to Christchurch over the years.
